For more than four centuries, Minju Opera has been part of Fuzhou's cultural identity. But in the 1980s, the art form faced a fight for survival. Xi Jinping, who served as Party secretary of Fuzhou from 1990 to 1996, championed a series of measures to preserve it — from securing stable funding for theater troupes to establishing a dedicated training school.
