From EVs to Yunnan coffee, Chinese brands win over ADB's country director for China
Asif S. Cheema, who was appointed the Asian Development Bank's country director for China in September 2025, is still relatively new to living in the country. But he said it did not take long to notice the global reach of Chinese brands such as BYD, Xiaomi and Huawei. After relocating to Beijing, he even found himself purchasing some of these products, including an electric vehicle.
"When you are in China, you realize there are so many brands, which are extremely strong and continue to amaze you in terms of quality and design," Cheema said, noting that this strength extends beyond high-tech products.
During a recent business trip to Yunnan province, he encountered companies producing high-quality coffee for export, as well as premium food products.
"I believe there is a very, very long list — across electronics, food and EVs — of products that a traveler has the choice to buy here," he said. "And that list continues to grow as I explore the country more."
