Addled by myth, Japan heads towards abyss
Share - WeChat
Some public discourse in Japan has romanticized Sanae Takaichi's push for a "normal nation" as a kind of "Odyssean homecoming". But rewriting historical memory, ceding military sovereignty and hollowing out Japan's pacifist Constitution are the very opposite of the Odyssean spirit.
Odysseus returned home carrying with him the lessons of war. Japan's current course is set for the opposite direction — toward an abyss with a rewritten past in hand.
A nation that refuses to confront its past will never find its true way home.
