Chinese swimming phenom Yu Zidi named women's MVP at Asian Games
Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi was named the women's Most Valuable Player of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, capping China's record gold-medal haul at an Asian Games held outside the country as the 13-year-old emerged as one of the brightest young stars of the Games.
Thai sprinter Puripol Boonson was named the men's MVP by the Olympic Council of Asia at an award ceremony in Nagoya.
Yu won three individual gold medals, setting three Asian Games records and one Asian record in a standout campaign that made her the youngest MVP in Asian Games history.
The teenager won the women's 200-meter butterfly in a Games-record 2 minutes and 5.08 seconds before producing an Asian record of 2:06.10 in the 200m individual medley. She completed her campaign with victory in the 400m individual medley in another Games-record time of 4:28.56.
"As a young athlete, this honor is an affirmation and, more importantly, an encouragement to young athletes," Yu said at the ceremony.
