Beijing's city flower has taken root at the White House, where 19 varieties of the rose are now blooming, a gift that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has praised as "Chinese rose diplomacy".
After Trump admired Chinese roses of different colors during his visit to the Zhongnanhai compound in Beijing in May, the flowers traveled across the Pacific to the White House several months later, becoming a new symbol of friendship, said Wang.
As a gesture of goodwill, Beijing selected 19 new, improved varieties of landscape roses bred in China, according to the Beijing Forestry and Parks Bureau.
