Xinhua | Updated: 2026-07-11 16:23

SOFIA -- Moldovan President Maia Sandu nominated Vasile Tofan as Moldova's new prime minister on Saturday.

The announcement was made at a news conference following the president's consultations with parliamentary factions on the same day.

Under the Constitution, the prime minister-designate must win a parliamentary vote of confidence on the government's program and the proposed cabinet lineup within 15 days of the nomination.

If the parliament approves the proposed government, the president will appoint the new government, which will then assume office.

Tofan, 44, is a member of Moldova's Party of Action and Solidarity. He has long been active in private equity investment and has worked as an investor, entrepreneur and financier. He is also an active advocate of Moldova's European integration, according to the official Moldpres news agency.
