Nestled in Hanyin county, Ankang, Shaanxi province, the Fengyan Ancient Terraced Fields were created in 1756, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), by migrants from Huguang — a historical region covering parts of present-day Hubei and Hunan provinces. Making the most of the rugged Qinling-Daba mountainous region, they built a gravity-fed irrigation system that continues to support farming today. With layered terraces embracing hillside villages, the landscape preserves centuries-old agricultural traditions and tells a remarkable story of resilience, ingenuity, and the enduring legacy of mountain farming in China.
