Kenya keeps vigil to keep Ebola at bay

At Kenya's western frontier, where thousands of travelers, traders and truck drivers cross the Malaba border every day, health workers and volunteers are working around the clock to prevent Ebola from entering the country.

Since the latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, about 1,500 travelers are screened every day at the Malaba One Stop Border Post, and more than 50,000 people have been screened since enhanced surveillance began.

As of Aug 4, the DRC had recorded 3,973 confirmed Ebola cases and 1,801 deaths. Although Uganda officially declared an end to its latest Ebola outbreak on July 28 after completing the required surveillance period without new cases, Kenya has maintained heightened surveillance at its border crossings because of the continued spread of the virus in neighboring DRC.
