Xinhua | Updated: 2026-09-17 14:10

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump is expected to meet Gulf leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday to discuss the next steps in the Iran war, US online news outlet Axios reported Wednesday.

The meeting is expected to focus on US ideas for a postwar strategy, the report said.

Citing sources, the report said Trump is expected to meet with leaders or foreign ministers from the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. The US Department of State sent out initial invitations on Wednesday.

Trump and his senior team are working on a day-after plan that is expected to be finalized after the midterm elections, according to the report.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also wanted to meet Trump in New York, but no meeting had been scheduled, Axios reported, citing an Israeli source.
