Chinese vice-president to attend UNGA general debate

Vice-President Han Zheng will travel to New York from Thursday to Saturday to attend the general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday.

On the sidelines of the general debate, Han will also attend a high-level dialogue hosted by China to mark the fifth anniversary of the Global Development Initiative, and meet with the UN secretary-general, the president of the 81st session of the General Assembly and leaders of relevant countries.

Guo said the world is undergoing accelerating changes unseen in a century, with transformation and turbulence intertwined and risks and challenges continuing to emerge.

The UN is a core platform for global governance, while the General Assembly's general debate provides an important opportunity for countries to build political consensus and coordinate multilateral action, he said.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations.

Guo said Han will elaborate on China's views and positions on the current international situation, major international and regional issues and the work of the UN.

He will also outline China's efforts to practice true multilateralism and promote world peace and development, Guo said.

China hopes to work with the international community to reinvigorate the authority and role of the UN, build greater synergy for reforming and improving global governance, and move in the right direction of building a community with a shared future for humanity, he added.
