Countdown to Nishan forum: A bronze symbol of order

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2026-09-26 14:17

How can a bronze artifact tell a story of order more than 3,000 years ago?

Unearthed in Qingzhou, Shandong province, the Yachou Yue is a Shang Dynasty (c.16th century–11th century BC) bronze ceremonial yue (axe-blade) featuring an openwork human-face motif and the inscription "Yachou". As an important ritual object, it symbolized status and authority, while reflecting the ritual norms and social order of early Chinese civilization.

Ritual gives shape to order; order makes harmony possible. The artifact offers a glimpse into how ritual and order were understood at the time.

Two days to go until the 2026 China International Confucius Cultural Festival and the 2026 Nishan Forum on World Civilizations. Across millennia, the pursuit of order continues to shape how societies live and thrive together.
