Anhui Medical University celebrates centennial milestone

Anhui Medical University celebrated its centennial on Oct 3, marking a century of advancement in medical education, scientific research, and public health service in China.

Founded in 1926 along Shanghai's Huangpu River, the institution later relocated to Hefei in East China's Anhui province, eventually becoming known as AHMU. Over the past hundred years, it has evolved into a premier medical powerhouse, producing more than 200,000 healthcare professionals.

AHMU's research prowess is firmly reflected in its expanding academic footprint. Two of its disciplines now rank in the global top 0.1 percent according to Essential Science Indicators (ESI) — achieving a historic first for universities in Anhui province — while 12 disciplines rank in the global top 1 percent. Furthermore, the university has led all provincial higher education institutions in grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China for five consecutive years.

To reinforce its strategic innovation, AHMU has established several forward-looking platforms. These include the medical robotics industry college for cross-disciplinary engineering and clinical training, cutting-edge smart drug-delivery research teams, and collaborative talent programs forged with prestigious institutions such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Fuwai Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

Beyond research and education, AHMU plays a pivotal role in translating scientific discoveries into clinical practice. Since 2021, the university has transferred 89 scientific achievements totaling nearly 28 million yuan ($4.17 million), effectively driving regional high-tech incubation.

Its extensive affiliated hospital network — anchored by the First Affiliated Hospital of AHMU, which ranks among China's top 30 comprehensive hospitals — delivers comprehensive, lifecycle healthcare services throughout Anhui and neighboring regions.

Looking ahead, AHMU will utilize its centennial milestone to spearhead AI-driven medical education and answer the call of the Healthy China initiative.
