MOSCOW - Five people were killed and 38 others injured, including 10 children, in a crash involving a truck and a passenger bus in Russia's Stavropol region early Sunday, the regional traffic police press service reported on social media platform Max.

The accident occurred at around 1:00 am Moscow time Sunday (2200 GMT Saturday) on the Kavkaz federal highway.

"Based on preliminary findings, the driver of the Setra bus, which was traveling on the Georgia-Moscow route, chose an unsafe speed and failed to maintain a safe distance from the KamAZ truck ahead, resulting in a collision, after which the bus veered into a ditch," the traffic police said in a statement.

Traffic police officers and investigators are working at the scene.
